This will set the color and make the petals look less dusty. Be sure to only do it for a few seconds as you don't want your flowers to absorb a lot of moisture. Knead a bit of shortening into a small ball of paste and then pull your small pieces for the centers from it before you attach them to the wire. Working more quickly will also help, which will be easier the more you practice. I don't know what type of paste you are using, but most commercial pastes (like Satin Ice) have a longer working time than scratch pastes. I use a scratch paste recipe by Nicholas Lodge (you can find it under recipes on Global Sugar Art), but I have used it for many years and am used to the quick drying time.
